Eat to Beat Cancer™ is a global campaign to crush the cancer epidemic by getting people to eat foods that starve cancer. Eattobeat.org is a resource hub and a recruitment platform for the community to inspire, influence, and monitor dietary behavior change.
Cancer, now the leading cause of death throughout the world, will touch every household. We believe the best answer to cancer is prevention. Eat to Beat Cancer™ has started a global movement to prevent cancer using a dietary approach that keeps even microscopic cancers from gaining their blood supply, a process called angiogenesis. The Eat to Beat initiative is built on a proven strategy of "starving cancers", an approach already exploited by state-of-the-art biopharma. There is a growing body of scientific evidence that foods we consume daily can fight cancer by blocking the blood vessels that feed cancer (anti-angiogenesis).
Eat to Beat Cancer™ is ushering an innovative shift in thinking towards cancer prevention using accessible and flavorful foods and beverages that have anti-angiogenesis potency to stop tumor growth. This initiative is built on our work and research conducted throughout the world and published in peer-reviewed journals from the National Cancer Institute, American Medical Association, American Society for Nutrition, and hundreds of other highly-regarded journals.
Angiogenesis: A Medical Revolution in the Making
More than 1-in-3 people will have cancer in their lifetime. Even more eye opening is that tiny, microscopic cancers are developing in our bodies all the time, even before we are old. It is whether blood vessels near these dormant tumors are held in check or instead grow that determines if the cancer will expand and spread. Angiogenesis is the name of the natural process that blood vessels grow in the body.
How important are these vessels? The healthy body maintains its blood vessels in a continuous state of balance. Cancer develops into a disease when abnormal cells overcome this balanced state and new blood vessels grow to feed cancers. But these blood vessels are also cancer's Achilles Heel. Cutting off a tumor’s blood supply starves it of oxygen and nutrients.
Forty years of research has now resulted in modern drugs that effectively combat cancer through anti-angiogenesis. These drugs effectively starve growing cancers in a way totally different from toxic chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. Novel drugs based on this unique approach have been successfully tested in thousands of patients, been approved by the FDA and other drug agencies throughout the world and have helped increase the survival and quality of life of people living with cancer. The anti-angiogenesis approach has been proven to be an effective in fighting cancers.
Targeting angiogenesis also provides an opportunity to prevent cancer. Certain foods contain natural molecules that can suppress abnormally growing blood vessels. What separates Eat to Beat is its focus on what you should add to your diet, rather than what to eliminate.
Independent Research and Systematic, Comprehensive Collection of Evidence
Eat to Beat Cancer™ is systematically studying the potency of foods and beverages containing cancer-starving activity in order to establish a new cancer-preventative diet. We're finding that the activity of foods depend on many factors – including the specific cultivated variety, the way the food is processed and cooked, even what foods are combined together. Using the same research systems and measures of activity used to test drugs, we are determining food types, varieties, combinations, and effect of cooking, processing, and storage on their potency against cancer.
We have researched dietary factors from fruits, vegetables, and herbs and spices and have identified and catalogued over 100 foods containing naturally occurring angiogenesis inhibitors. We then track these factors and their impact on people in epidemiological studies – in which large numbers of people are observed and followed for many years. The cumulative evidence from scientific and epidemiological studies is integrated into what we call a “MetaOpinion™“.
By combining laboratory science with real world data showing that consumption of certain foods reduces cancer risk, we are creating a powerful case for incorporating these foods into one’s everyday diet. The goal of the Eat to Beat initiative is to identify the most potent anti-angiogenesis food, based on the best available research, and to disseminate this knowledge to people around the world. Our ENABLE™ (Enabling Network for Access to Best Levels of Evidence) System is democratizing this knowledge using information technology, social media, our user-community, and a global network of experts.
Food as Medicine
The Angiogenesis Revolution has been quietly taking shape. Backed by scientific studies, it is now poised to delivery on a potential answer to cancer through prevention. Our vision is that food will be the ultimate delivery vehicle for natural bioactive molecules that can cut off the blood supply to cancers at their earliest stages. Without a private blood supply, tumors remain small and harmless. Our goal is to encourage people to eat the foods and varieties with the most potent anti-cancer activity, prepare foods in ways that optimizes their effects, and sustain long-term healthy eating habits.
Because great flavor and satisfaction are the best ways to motivate dietary uptake and compliance, tasty foods and meals are core to the Eat to Beat strategy.
About The Angiogenesis Foundation
Founded in 1994, the Angiogenesis Foundation is the world’s first 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to conquering disease using a new approach based on angiogenesis, the growth of new capillary blood vessels in the body. We have identified angiogenesis as the “common denominator” in society’s most feared diseases. Our focus on this underlying process of many different diseases makes our approach as a medical organization unique. The Foundation is the recognized, expert voice and champion of this new field of medicine.
Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Angiogenesis Foundation’s goal is to help people lead healthier, longer lives by restoring balance to blood vessel growth. Through research, education, and advocacy — with patients, physicians, researchers, industry, payers, and government — we enable patients to gain access to safe and effective treatments coming from the angiogenesis field for cancer, blinding diseases, wounds, and many other serious diseases.
As a scientific organization, the Angiogenesis Foundation is independent of any individual, institution, or commercial entity. We are committed to helping people around the world benefit from the full promise of angiogenesis-based medicine, and to make life-, limb-, and vision-saving treatments available to everyone in need.
